Nanobots can turn base materials such as dirt water air and electricity directly into food or any other organic compounds. Nanobots are just around the corner and we will probably have them long before space habitats become common. Evolution sucks. After all my search for assistance from friends and neighbors proved abortive, I feel there was no one who truly cares. I became so exhausted due to lack of funds to expand my business and my 2 kids aged 5 and 8 were also not good looking due to lack of proper care as a result of finance. One faithful morning I saw an old time friend of my late husband and I told him all I have been going through and he said the only way he could help was to direct me to a good loan officer in USA that also helped him, He explained to me on how he was financially down and how he got boosted by this loan officer ( Mr Pedro who grant him 7,000,000.00 USD loan at an affordable rate of 2% rate . He further assured me that they were the only legit loan firm he found online. He gave me their email & That was how i applied and was also granted a loan and my life changed for the good. Plants absorb a still narrower range of blue light and a narrow range of red light quite efficiently, but neither band absorbs anything of a longer wavelength, and the further short of the optimal wavelengths, the less efficient the energy absorption. IE, yellow light may be absorbed, but any energy in a photon above the red is lost as heat. This means that 72 watts of PAR can actually be produced using less than 72 watts of LEDs. Optimized wavelengths (not white light) can produce that intensity of useful light from just 35 or 40 watts of electrical power.
2) The intensity / power is while the plants are illuminated, and for most plants that is NOT 24 hours per day but (except when flowering) is optimally longer than 12 hours per day. If the AVERAGE illumination is 16 hours per day, the average power consumption (over 24 hours) is still less, and it makes a great deal of sense to have several different farm areas with the light/power rotating between them.
3) Any light that doesn't get absorbed by a leaf is wasted. Thus it is best to have tall plants grown among ground covers such as wheat, or young seedlings grown between larger, more mature plants. And white or mirrored ceilings, walls, and soil!

The bottom line is that it MAY be possible to get by with much less power per person devoted to lighting the farms.Stephen D. Coveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12946494775268235149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7338070402887246857.post-57596797186958768142015-05-18T17:42:21.157-04:002015-05-18T17:42:21.157-04:00Hmm… I read blogs on a similar topic, but i never ...Hmm… I read blogs on a similar topic, but i never visited your blog. It is on-line at www.nss.org/settlement.
One of the key points I wanted to emphasize is that humans only consume about 25% of most crops, yet we have to grow the entire plant. This means that as the plant grows, it produces 4 times the oxygen consumed by the humans being fed by the crops, and 75% of the plant matter produced must (in the end) be burned with that excess oxygen (could be "burned" by goats or chickens, of course).
As crops are grown, they need more CO2 than we exhale, and they produce more oxygen than we can consume. That must be balanced out.Stephen D. Maybe we could go up and slice small pieces off (say 50 meter diameters at a time) - big enough to mine but small enough to shepherd into orbit. Anything we can't salvage should be routed far away from our orbit. Before when talk of asteroid response was to blow them up or divert them, I prayed that wiser heads would realize that capturing such objects was the way to handle them. Now there are start up businesses planning just such ventures. That is in the private sector. Our Governments have failed us in this arena miserably. NASA, ESA, China and India, the space capable nations, never banded together to treat the occasion of 2012 DA14. This was a case where we could have tried our "bomb it to oblivion tactic". No, not when it was headed at us. But after it passed. There should have been a posse of instruments and devices to head it off after the pass. Once we knew it was gone by, we should have blown the hell out of it to: 1) make sure it never came back as anything more than a meteor; 2)analyzed the dust remains to determine its composition; 3)calibrate our armaments; and 4) tried to capture and return some of the material for study. A year was plenty of advance notice time to have organized off the shelf components for such a mission.
michael Hanlonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13647065632865927354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7338070402887246857.post-88624398927011390322013-01-11T12:27:39.238-05:002013-01-11T12:27:39.238-05:00BRILLIANT!! I personally would be more inclined to take a trip out to the asteroid belt, to use an already existing structure rather than build one as the pressure vessel. Vesta has gravity and rotation, so I'd dig and drill into it and tunnel to provide the shielding and living compartments under ground. Colonies could be connected by subway trains. It has a surface area the size of Pakistan so plenty of potential. Why not equip the entire planet to make it a giant interstellar ship with ion drives run by nuclear plants and set up solar shingles on the surface, while building an army of utility and harvesting robots capable of escape velocity to go out and get ice and everything else you need straight out of nearby rocks or out further in the asteroid belt. You don't need earth for anything and you don't need the space rock to be so close to earth that you are forced to build structures you need with limited resources...and justifying existence through profit isn't a need for me personally. When people have genuine passion money is a silly way to run other people as slaves. People could just do what interests them. Nobody has to go out there who doesn't think it would be cool and have natural interest in it. It's nice to be with people who are there for the right reasons, never care about coming back and aren't prostituting themselves for profit. That's just my view. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08158547140346747916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7338070402887246857.post-91752690814495924042012-02-12T06:04:33.194-05:002012-02-12T06:04:33.194-05:00Your math is correct.

If we don't care about cooking them, we can use much higher energy densities.

Most importantly, that energy is available 24x7, while ground-based solar power doesn't work at night, when it's cloudy, or in early morning or late afternoon when the sun angle is too low, and the fraction of time of high sun angles varies by season. On average, ground solar is available perhaps 8 hours per day (more in dry deserts where you don't need it, less in high-latitude cloudy areas like the mid-west and north-eastern states where you need it most).

A last point: solar radiance in space is 1367 w/m2, while on the ground is only about 1000 w/m2 even when the sun is shining directly overhead.Stephen D. (Maybe there are Russian Boosters also?) The linked article at Wikipedia says there are 5 S-IVBs in heliocentric orbits making 6 total, possibly spaced at two months apart in Earth's year around the sun. Their empty weight was 20,000 lbs and their physical make up is also documented and might be targets which might not need Earth return.
Hmmm, a nice mission might be to get one, toss it back at earth then go to a second one and capture it for return. Or maybe even, after the second one, gather Snoopy and return both the S-IVB and Snoopy to prove handling of a broken asteroid.michael Hanlonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13647065632865927354noreply@blogger.com
